5G-TRANSFORMER: Cloud Robotics for Industrial Automation

Home » 5G-TRANSFORMER: Cloud Robotics for Industrial Automation

The controlling functionality of the robots is moved to the cloud to benefit from its massive computing power.
Huge amounts of information will have to be transferred instantaneously. With lower latency and higher bandwidth than other forms of wireless connectivity, 5G is the optimal choice.

In terms of ITU 5G functionalities, 5G-TRANSFORMER investigates:

  • Low latency (milliseconds), eMBB,  high availability, resilience, security, positioninig accuracy, energy reduction, service creation time.

The latest demo shows centralised control with visual navigation algorithms (no GPS); 5G deterministic latency transport and mobile network; 5G-TRANSFORMER MTF function (abstraction). Remote functions are connected to lower levels by radio communication via the Ericsson Xhaul network, which was developed in the 5G Crosshaul project. The feasibility of remote functions depends on achievable latency. Lower latency allows for more functions to be performed remotely.
