5GAA White Paper - Toward fully connected vehicles: Edge computing for advanced automotive communications

While 4G is already supporting many use cases in the automotive sector, 5G networks play a key role in meeting the challenging requirements for fully connected cars with the maximum level of automation.

One of the most important benefits of edge computing is the availability and exploitation of local and context information, providing the opportunity to produce and thus consume edge services in close proximity to the application endpoint.  Benefits span improved latency end-to-end, better management of computing capabilities, by conveniently splitting server processing among mobile edge computing (MEC) and the remote cloud, and improved privacy through local filtering and anonymisation of sensitive data.

This 5GAA white paper gives an early overview of automotive use cases and shows how edge computing provides compute/storage/networking capabilities at the network edge, and how it can be considered a supporting technology for multiple services for connected AD vehicles. It highlights MEC as a standardised solution for diverse automotive stakeholders as well as other vertical market segments. It also illustrates the opportunities already available for early deployments using edge computing for autonomous driving (AD), using flagship services as examples.
