5G has great potential for pedestrian protection. 

Robust and ubiquitous wireless networks with extensive coverage, high data transfer speeds and low latency are key to safe automated driving. Vehicle to everything (V2X)-supported automated driving will dramatically improve safety and driving comfort. By sharing data with surrounding vehicles an infrastructure, V2X systems can raise driver awareness about upcoming potential dangers and dramatically improve collision avoidance. V2X refers in particular to the car's communication system, where information from sensors and other sources travels through high-bandwidth, low-latency and high-reliability links. 

Delivering safety, mobility and convenience services as an integrated service to road users is an essential starting point, as it provides value to customers and ultimately to society. 

 
5G Capabilities and Functionalities 
 
In terms of 5G functionalities, 5GCAR investigates New Radio (NR) positioning. Overall, 5GCAR has proposed radio interface and network architecture solutions leveraging 5G tailored to the needs of the automotive industry. The technical solutions target very low latencies below 5 milliseconds and very high reliability (99.999%).
 
Advances key to realising the full potential of 5G include: V2X slicing and network architecture. The goal of the 5G V2X architecture is maximising reliability and minimising delay requirements for V2X mission-critical applications.
 
Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB): extending cellular coverage and improving  network capacity. Ultra-reliable low latency communications: applications requiring high reliability and low latency connectivity, e.g. mission-critical services. Strong security and availability requirements.
 

About this 5GCAR Automotive Demonstration

Summary of scenario: A vulnerable road user with a smartphone is walking next to the road. A vehicle is approaching but the driver cannot see the position of the vulnerable road user because an obstacle is in the way.
The 5G network determines the position of the road user and alerts the driver. 

In this demonstation, 5GCAR  tests innovative technologies to protect vulnerable road users. A vehicle and a vulnerable road user (VRU), modelled as a remote-controlled pedestrian dummy, are each equipped with a portable hardware prototype continuously transmitting 5G positioning signals to the network infrastructure. This helps to accurately position both the vehicle and the vulneable road user. 

On top of that, a 4G network is used for exchanging real-time location, sensor information and warning messages, to avoid collisions. A display in the vehicle depicts warnings about relevant objects such as other cars or pedestrians, sending alerts on any upcoming critical situations. The vulneable road user can also be equipped with such a display. Additionally, an acoustic warning may be provided inside the vehicle and to the road user.
